SAMPLE POLICY WORK

b. Detailed Policy Statements

A. Medication Administration

Policy Statement: All medications must be administered to clients in a manner that maximizes safety and minimizes the risk of error. This includes strict adherence to protocols for different routes of administration, proper verification of medication orders, and careful monitoring of clients for adverse effects.

Procedural Guidelines:

1.

Preparation:

– Verify the medication order against the client’s current Medication Administration Record (MAR) to confirm the correct drug, dose, route, and time. – Review the client’s allergy history and any recent changes in the care plan before administering the medication. – Wash hands and ensure that all necessary supplies (e.g., syringes, alcohol swabs, medication cups) are available and sterile. 2. Administration Techniques: – Oral Medications: Administer by verifying oral routes, ensuring that the client is in an upright position to prevent choking. – Topical Medications: Clean the area, apply the prescribed amount, and document the application site. – Inhaled Medications: Ensure proper use of inhalation devices; assist clients when needed and confirm the correct technique is used. – Injectable Medications (IM/IV): Verify the appropriate injection site, utilize aseptic technique, and monitor the client for immediate adverse reactions.

3.

Post-Administration Monitoring:

– Observe clients for signs of adverse reactions for a predetermined period, ensuring that emergency protocols can be initiated if necessary. – Record the time and any observations in the MAR immediately after administration.

B. Medication Storage and Disposal

Policy Statement: All medications must be stored securely and under conditions that prevent degradation while ensuring that only authorized staff have access. Expired or unused medications are to be managed and disposed of following established protocols to prevent misuse and environmental harm.
